TIGNES 2008/09
Part 01
We left Thame in Oxfordshire on Friday 5th December, loaded our Nissan Pathfinders and headed to Folkestone in convoy. I travelled with Caroline, who I am working with in Tignes, and we all stayed overnight in a Travel Tavern before taking the 5.30am EuroTunnel train to Calais. Then came the mammoth traverse of France to reach the Alps, again in convoy. We were joined in the car that morning by Barney who was coming along for training as a reserve. We spent most of the journey getting to know each other and taking turns driving.
After numerous fuel and food stops, we took our final break just outside Moutiers and then started our ascent through Bourg St Maurice (does anyone know who St Maurice is?). The weather had turned decidedly snowy as we started twisting up to Tignes and the visibility was down to a few metres. We arrived at out hotel, Le Ecrin de Neige at Val Claret, at around 9.30pm, quickly checked into our rooms and headed to a late dinner. Xynthia, the third member of Team Tignes, had travelled to the resort from Paris, where she has lived for the past 3 years, and we got to know her over dinner as none of the AMR team had previously met her. And to finish off the evening we headed out to one of the few open bars in resort, Crowded House, for a nightcap. It had been decided that the Sunday was going to be a day-off before our training week started on Monday. So a few drinks were taken before retiring to bed for an early start to enjoy the lovely fresh snow that had, so fortunately, been delivered to the mountains for our arrival.
Caroline and Xynthia are pleased with their first horizontal banner.
The first jump on the AMR.
Setting up the All Mode Run in training week.
Left to right: Pete G, Mel, Mike (Biggles) and Xynthia enjoy the early December sunshine.
Left to right: Alex, Alice, Barney, Mark and Alex II on top of the Grande Motte.
